Good for a Laugh

Here is the music video my students made. My video editing skills are better than I though considering what I had to work with.

Fun Times

So just a quick update on what I have been doing this last week. Last Tuesday was supposed to be the big playoffs for Corey's slow pitch team but the lights turned off ten minutes early. At that point the score was 23 to 12, top of the fourth, bases loaded, no outs (Corey's team ahead and on base). The opposing team insisted that the game needed to be finished so tonight I went out in the rain to see the final three innings of the game. They won, but the other team did put of a bit of a fight and the end result was a narrow 25 to 22 victory.

Their team name was Bull Moose

Last Saturday Corey and I were invited to attend the Nats game with Ben and Becky (other Calvin grads who are on Corey's team). Ben is the tall one with "antlers" and Becky is to the right in the picture above. The Nats lost to the Phillies, but we had some awesome seats up on the third deck behind home plate and it was a fun game to watch. I had never before seen any professional baseball games until moving out here to DC and now I have already seen three this season plus the two I went to last fall. It is pretty cool.

If you look close you can even see the ball in the second picture.

As you all know this Monday was Memorial Day and while my plans had been to sit around home I ended up going to the parade. Mostly I went because after talking to Mom I felt a bit guilty that I was in our Nation's Capital and wasn't doing anything on the holiday. I went with some housemates and watched a good portion of it, but you can only watch so many high school marching bands and people dressed up in old military uniforms before it just gets boring. We ended up leaving early.

Update

Sorry that it has been some time since I last updated on here. The last two weeks have flown by. As I mentioned before I am now finished working with my students so I am filling in at a different middle school. It is interesting to not be in charge for once. At times it is a bit frustrating because I would do things differently but then I remind myself that I don't have to make those decisions anymore. I now have more time to talk with the students and yesterday I got to sit and play scrabble with a few. Before, students would ask me to play a game with them, but I would have to be keeping track of all the other kids at the same time so I was never really focused. It is a bit of an adjustment and I find myself wondering around the group and trying to keep track of all the students instead of focusing on a few which is more what I am supposed to be doing now. The kids are a lot of fun but now that I have had a bit of distance I find that I miss my other students.

As many of you know last Friday my sister Quinlan got married! It was a beautiful wedding and I had  a lot of fun. I flew into Iowa on Wednesday and back out on Sunday morning. It was a very exhausting few days. Wednesday night was the bachelorette party, Thursday was decorating the church and the rehearsal, Friday was full of pictures and the wedding, and Saturday they opened gifts and then in the evening I was with family. My flight on Sunday left at 7 out of Moline which meant that I had to be up and out the door by 4:30. I ended up sleeping on all my flights and the layover and still I took a nap that afternoon. Now I am back to work and don't know when I will get the next break. Although Monday is Memorial Day so I get a long weekend!

Last Week!

Thursday is my final day with my students at Chavez Prep. The students still have school for another month, but our program is ending. I have really enjoyed working with these kids (despite some very rough days). I am going to be helping out at a different Kid Power middle school site that is continuing until the first week of June. It should be interesting helping out at a different site and will also be nice to not be the one in charge of everything. This summer we are going to have a 6 week summer camp which I am going to start getting ready for during my morning time at the office.

The timing for ending this program is very handy in that I do not have to miss any days at my school for Quinlan's wedding. I will be flying home next Wednesday morning. I am looking forward to the long weekend despite the fact that it will be very busy. This last weekend I spent a lot of time outside so hopefully this redness turns into a nice tan before then.
